What Barbenheimer Taught Us About Marketing

Barbie and Oppenheimer inspired Barbenheimer marketing graphic

Over the past few months, Barbie and Oppenheimer have taken over social media.

Coincidence? I don’t think so.
A little luck and good timing? Maybe.

But behind both movies were dedicated marketing teams that had been building anticipation ever since their release dates were announced.

Releasing two completely different, competing movies on the same day could have been risky. But it also turned out to be brilliant — as these two films demonstrated at their very best! Add strong, amazing marketing, promotion and smart use of social media, and something even bigger happened: “Barbenheimer” took on a life of its own online.

As a marketer, I can’t help but admire the work behind it. Barbie alone reportedly had a marketing budget of around $150 million, and the campaign helped generate extraordinary results for cinemas around the world!

๐Ÿ’– From creating a real-life Barbie DreamHouse and collaborating with brands such as Airbnb and Duolingo to Margot Robbie’s carefully curated outfits during the press tour, pink taking over fashion and Barbie-related products “suddenly” appearing everywhere — the campaign was almost impossible to escape!

And yet, I still underestimated how enormous the effect would be, and how much it would influence me personally.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer largely spoke for itself, and I had already decided that I wanted to see it.

๐ŸŒธ But together, these two competing films managed to generate an enormous amount of attention on social media. Their contrast created a synergy that gave both films more attention than either might have achieved alone — and generated a serious sense of FOMO. At least for me and I dare say: to many others as well which gave the fantastic effect of us wanting to see not only one of the movies, but both of them!

So, thanks to some extremely talented marketers, an internet phenomenon and probably quite a few clever algorithms, I now wanted to see Barbie too.

Which leaves us with the big question:

๐Ÿ’• What can we learn from this?

I would argue that:

  • A thoughtful marketing plan, strategic execution and effective use of social media can make an enormous difference.
  • A significant marketing budget, creative freedom and enough time can REALLY deliver results.
  • Sometimes, the audience takes your marketing and turns it into something even bigger than you could have planned.

Perhaps that’s the most interesting lesson of Barbenheimer:

The studios marketed two completely different films.
The audience turned them into one cultural event! ๐Ÿ’–
